ABOUT THE JEWELBOX
Micky Roof has been a jewelry designer
since 1972, specializing in custom designed, one-of-a-kind creations for
a discriminating clientele who seek jewelry that makes a unique,
personal statement. During this time, Ms. Roof has grown from a
one-person studio to a shop of ten; her atelier is located on the Cayuga
Lake Waterfront in Ithaca, New York.
Ms. Roof's trademark is her innate ability to go beyond the boundaries
of conventional design into areas that reflect natural elements, using
only extraordinary gems and precious materials to express these themes.
Ms. Roof's work has been shown in several important galleries in the
United States, and is collected by clients nationally and
internationally.
In addition to her own creative
self-expression, Ms. Roof is dedicated to educating the public about the
importance of public support for the arts in our communities. A founding
member of the Greater Ithaca Art Trail, she has sat on the board of the
Tompkins County Chamber of Commerce and a committee for the Tompkins
County Board of Representatives for the Cultural Tourism Alliance. She
is also a member of Rotary International.
ARTIST’S STATEMENT
"The inspiration for my current body of work came to me as I stepped out
my front door one fall afternoon. I have two majestic old white birch
trees, which in this area of New York State are a real treasure.
"I was looking at the texture of their
limbs and the fantastic colors of fall, and wondered how I could
translate this into a piece of jewelry. This inspiration soon found me
rendering the delicate textures of birch twigs and sticks in precious
metals. As I am also an avid collector of opals, I chose to put these
two passions together — combining the stick shapes with the brilliant
and varied colors of opals. The result is the Twig Collection. This body
of work seems to have no end, like nature itself. This is the kind of
design that I have been searching for for many years. There is no
language barrier, nor cultural barrier. It is an expression that all
human beings can recognize."
DEDICATION TO QUALITY
Uncompromising quality (reflected in the materials she uses, and in the
execution of her craft itself) is a consistent characteristic of Ms.
Roof's creations. "You can absolutely find less-expensive jewelry," she
says, "and I wouldn't suggest otherwise. But, it's very unlikely that
you'll find this level of quality in a lower price range. Superior
quality has always been extremely important to me, and to my art...and
in that context, our prices are absolutely realistic. For the consumer,
the selection process depends upon knowing what's out there—knowing the
difference—and having a good sense of what will make you happy. "I've
long avoided the 'trends' of mass-merchandised jewelry," she adds. "The
pieces in my collections remain wearable, rather than ending up in a
jewelry box for years on end once they've outlived their popularity."
BACKGROUND
Ms. Roof was introduced to the art of jewelry making by her high school
art teacher, Edward Hoops, in Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania. She earned a B.S.
in Art Education from Mansfield State College in Mansfield,
Pennsylvania, where she majored in jewelry design and fabrication; she
took workshops with Stanley Lecthin from the Tyler School of Art at
Temple University, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, trained at the Cheltenham
Art Center in Philadelphia, and studied hollowware construction with
Hans Christianson of the Rochester Institute of Technology.
THE JEWELBOX
Ms. Roof opened her own custom studio in 1976, and her first retail shop
in Sayre, Pennsylvania in 1980. She launched her first large retail
operation, "Micky Roof Jewelers" (including a full-service shop and a
staff of goldsmiths), in Ithaca, New York in 1985; a second Ithaca
retail operation, The Jewelbox, debuted in 2005.
Consolidating these enterprises in 2006,
Micky now centers the company's retail activities at The Jewelbox (with
administrative offices, and additional goldsmiths, nearby). Here she
specializes in GIA-certified diamonds and carries the finest collection
of precious and semi-precious stones, and unique gems and minerals, in
New York State's Finger Lakes region. A full-service jewelry shop
catering to both a regional and an Internet-based clientele, The
Jewelbox showcases Ms. Roof's own one-of-a-kind jewelry creations
alongside the works of other contemporary jewelry artists from around
the world ...and provides a broad spectrum of custom jewelry design and
repair services.
